Getting the most from conferences

by Kate on July 14, 2010

Think about a seminar, conference or business event you’ve been to. What were some of the ideas you heard that could help your business and what actions did you take to capitalise on them?

Conferences are a great way to share proven success tips and to get new ideas, but often there’s an overwhelming amount to take in, reflect on and – potentially – to implement. We want and need the information, but turning it to action isn’t always so easy once we’re back in the daily routine.

Here are some suggestions for ways to get the most out of the time and money you invest in conferences and business events.

  • Make notes of what interests you, ideas you hear and who to follow up afterwards for more information. I’ve found it helps to make notes of what is important to me even if the speaker provides notes.
  • Be clear about about your business priorities and the issues you’re facing so you can be alert for useful information. It’s a good idea to jot down the issues before you go to the event as this helps get focus on what’s important.
  • Have an open mind and be ready to hear new ideas or get fresh insights.
  • Talk with your peers about what you found interesting and how it might apply to your business; this helps to crystallise what you’ve heard. Breaks are a great time to do this.
  • Review your notes before you get back to work – for example in the evening or on the plane home – and decide what you are going to act on. Make a list of things to be done or accomplished, together with deadlines and who will be responsible.
  • For each item on your list ask “What’s the next action I can take to move this forward?”. Do it!

Don’t forget to share with your team what you’ve learned and what actions you’re taking – and ask for their help to get things done. If team members have attended the conference consider asking them to make a presentation based on what they have learned.

What helps you get the most from conferences and events? Please share your tips.
